How Often Should You Clean a Grease Trap?

You should clean your grease trap every one to three months, depending on the type of trap you have, how often the kitchen’s trap is used, and other factors. You can consult with our plumbers to determine what type of cleaning schedule is best for your home or business. It may also be time to have your grease trap cleaned if you notice the system:

  • Smells bad.
  • Has over one-fourth or more of the total liquid depth.
  • Is draining slowly or backs up often.

What Is a Grease Trap & Why Is It Needed?

A grease trap is a system through which kitchen wastewater flows before it goes into the sewer system, and it traps any grease that may be mixed in with the water. Because grease is less dense than water, it floats on top of the water. Thus, when people throw waste into their sink and the wastewater flows through the system, the grease remains on the surface inside and is trapped using baffles.

The Importance of Grease Trap Cleaning

On average, grease traps can last for up to seven years if they are properly cleaned and maintained. If you don’t clean your grease trap, the system’s lifespan isn’t the only thing that will suffer. Here are three other reasons you should prioritize cleaning your grease trap.

  1. Unclean grease traps do not promote a healthy environment. As we mentioned, you may notice a foul smell if the system is overdue for cleaning. If left unclean, those around the sink may also become exposed to bacteria from the grease and buildup.
  2. Failing to clean the system can lead to plumbing issues. If you do not regularly clean your trap, your entire property’s plumbing may suffer.
  3. Businesses can be fined if they do not clean their grease traps. Legally, restaurants and other businesses are required by law to routinely clean their grease traps every 90 days. Failing to schedule and complete the cleaning can lead to costly fines.

Can You Clean a Grease Trap Yourself?

To clean your grease trap, you will need to clear the sink, and you should consider starting earlier in the day to ensure you can take your time. To begin, you should remove the system’s lid slowly to avoid damaging the gaskets. Then you should follow the next few steps.

  • Measure how many inches of grease are in the trap. You should record this number as it will need to be included in the Fats, Oils, and Greases (FOG) report.
  • Remove any remaining water from the grease trap. Using a bucket or pump, remove the water and set it aside.
  • Remove the grease from the trap. You can remove this grease with your hand, a bucket, a shovel, or a scooper. Be sure to be thorough and scrape the sides and life to prevent any buildup.
  • Clean the trap. Using warm water and a cleaning solution, you should scrub and flush out your grease trap.
  • Put the water back into the system. Pour the water you set aside earlier ack into your grease trap.
  • Put the trap back together again. Return the lid and other removed parts.
